Your Citavi account contains your license keys and helps you manage and purchase licenses. In addition, you can do the following:
- After logging in to your account, you can see any upgrade discounts for new versions that you are entitled to.
- If you received a Citavi voucher code, you can redeem it for a personalized license key.
- If you purchasedย licenses for Citavi for DBServer, you can download the license file that you’ll then install on the server.

- If you are using Citavi’s Publication Assistant to insert placeholders in Microsoft Word,ย convert your placeholders to fields with Citavi 4 orย 5. After that install the upgrade to Citavi 6.ย Please note theย system requirements.
- If you are using Citavi’s Publication Assistant to insert placeholders in LibreOffice or OpenOffice do not install the upgrade to Citavi 6.ย Pleaseย enter your email address hereto express your interest in a LibreOffice add-in.
- If you are using aย TeX editor, you do not have to make any changes.ย Citavi 6 continues to support TeX.

Most participatingย educational institutions andย companiesย have already unlockedย Citavi 6 for their members. You can switch to Citavi 6, if your organizationย isย listed hereย without the [Citavi 5] designation.ย
You do not have to enter your license data
Log in to Citavi 6ย with your account information.ย Citavi will recognize whether you have a valid license for Citavi 6.
Upon logging in, you are given the option to stay logged in. This is only recommended if you are the sole user of your computer. The license data is stored on your computer for no longer than a year. You will then have to log in to Citavi with an active internet connection to confirm your license.
This can happen if you created your account with an email address that we don’t recognizeย orย if you used a login from another service provider (Facebook, Microsoft, Google) to create your account.
Solution: In Citavi Account,ย add the email addressย that you used for a site license request or for your purchase.
Citavi includes a robust Citation Style Editor which makes it possible to implement almost any citation rules you might encounter. As a result, the Editor is a very complex tool and requires a great deal of time to master. It’s often more efficient to first try an alternate approach:
- Ask if your library or faculty can provide a Citavi style.
If you need a citation style that follows the guidelines of aย university chair, anย instituteย or aย faculty, it is only ofย local relevanceย and cannot therefore be created by us for free. However, if the faculty or library creates a fitting citation style for Citavi, we will be happy to upload the style upon request into our central repository.ย Please contact theย Citavi-Supportfor further information. - Search for a matching or similar style.
There’s a good chance that you’ll be able to find a style in Citavi that is similar to yours. In Citavi 4 and later an advanced style finder is available, which helps you select styles according to certain criteria. Ourย manualshows you how to use this feature. - Don’t make unnecessary changes.
If your department or course requires you to use a style that only differs in a few small details from the style you found, check with your professor or advisor to see if their guidelines are “only” a recommendation and if it might be possible to use a different citation style. Such citation rules are usually created to give students some guidance so that sources are cited completely and in a consistent way. - Take the time to become familiar with the Citation Style Editor’s main features.
